Facts on Fluoride

Without practicing proper oral hygiene habits and scheduling regular dental visits, teeth become more vulnerable to cavities. Cavities are caused by acid-producing bacteria that collect around the teeth and gums or plaque, as we like to call it. Brushing twice a day and cleaning between teeth with floss helps remove this plaque. However, another key to excellent oral hygiene is fluoride, a mineral that helps prevent cavities and can repair teeth in the very early, microscopic stages of the disease. Here at the dental practice of Dr. Robert B. Ruyak, DMD, we can discuss professional fluoride treatments with you to see if you are a prime candidate.

Depending on your oral health status, fluoride treatments may be recommended every three, six, or twelve months. The fluoride preparation used in the dental office is a much stronger concentration than that in toothpaste or fluoride mouth rinses that you may find in the store. The fluoride may be in the form of a solution, gel, foam, or varnish and is typically applied with a cotton swab or a brush. It can also be used as a rinse or placed in a tray that is held in the mouth for several minutes. After the treatment, you may be asked not to rinse, eat, or drink for at least 30 minutes to allow the teeth to absorb the fluoride to start the tooth repair process.

Cavity Prevention

At the practice of Dr. Robert Ruyak, DMD, we have all sorts of materials to fill your cavities once they arise, however, we’d rather you prevent them altogether. Cavities are what you get from tooth decay and tooth decay can affect both the outer coating of a tooth (enamel) and the inner layer (dentin). Fortunately, there are many steps you can take to help prevent the formation of a cavity.

Cavities are created when bacteria in your mouth interact with refined sugars and carbohydrates such as the ones found in soda and sweets, so there is reason dentists advise you to stay away from sugary treats. This combination of sugars and acids promotes the loss of protective calcium and phosphate in your teeth’s enamel, eventually leading to decay. Prevention is always easier than treatment and it begins by adopting healthy oral hygiene habits and making the right dietary changes in addition to scheduling regular dental checkups every six months.
